CHAPTER 10

Crystal looked at her opponent but her mind was racing and focused on something else. There was going to be a war with Downey. What was even worse was that the Queen was willing to use students out from the Tower to fight them. Crystal was scared to the pit and back, she wanted to argue against going to fight a dragon but knew it would be pointless. Each of the Big Four and other people in their class had fought a dragon while they were still in the Tower. If that was the second strongest class then the first strongest class would have to fight dragons as well. The Queen had agreed to take only those the instructors thought were ready for such a challenge. Crystal’s opponent Ariel was a second year that Alonna had not properly documented. Crystal knew she had some skill or she would not be a part of the tournament representing the second years. Crystal could also see the worry in Ariel’s dark eyes and sweat beading on her dark skin. Ariel was probably worried about dragon fighting as well.

When the match started, Crystal did not try anything fancy. Two quick mage bolts followed by a large mage bolt. The first mage bolt hit Ariel solidly and the girl had enough sense to hit the ground and let the next two pass over her. Crystal did not let up though, she used the same small mage bolts followed by a larger one system to get Ariel moving. Crystal was missing most of her spells but had Ariel on the run, Ariel was able to get a mage shield up to stand her ground but that was what Crystal was waiting for. Crystal had remembered her fight with Wallace and liked how the mage waited out his prey. Crystal wanted to add a new wrinkle on his technique.

Crystal slowed down her spell casting and kept up a steady rhythm against Ariel’s shield. Crystal’s magical refill rate surpassed that of the energy she was using so she was able to wait. If Ariel dropped her shield then Crystal would attack her before she could move out of the way. If Ariel kept her shield up then Crystal was ready to outlast her opponent, Ariel would eventually run out of energy and forfeit. Ariel decided to surprise Crystal by taking to the sky in an erratic pattern, making her hard to hit. Crystal was going to join her in the sky but thought better of it. Ariel could waste her energy by staying airborne if she wanted to, eventually she would have to land and fight.

Ariel threw all types of spells at Crystal, most of them were so slow to cast that Crystal was able to move out of the way. The spells that came too quick she blocked with her shield, Crystal could tell Ariel was frustrated and getting desperate. Ariel tried to land once, Crystal upped her attacks and only stopped when Ariel was fully in the air.
